Operation Holiday & the Goddard Mitten Tree
At this season of peace and goodwill we are grateful for the opportunity to familiarize you with Goddard Operation Holiday and the Goddard Mitten Tree program sponsored by the Goddard Lions Club with the strong support of our school community and area businesses. Each year applications are taken for a family with a child or children in need who live in the Goddard School District that may not otherwise receive a gift this Christmas. If your family needs help during the holidays, and lives in the Goddard School District, please fill out an application and return to a Goddard school by Friday, November 13, 2009.
Each child's name will then be added to a mitten on the tree located at White's Foodliner in Goddard starting Thursday, November
19. Unwrapped gifts need to be returned by Monday, December 7. We invite anyone who would
like to participate to "adopt" a child from the Mitten Tree to provide the needs
requested. Please take less mittens and fill all needs rather than taking
several mittens and only partially completing the list.
H1N1 / Swine Flu
H1N1
Influenza is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus
that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause
high levels of illness but low death rates in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may
circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the
late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. Human cases of
swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection have been identified in Kansas as well
as four additional states and internationally. This situation is of high concern
for public health officials because it is a novel virus – one that we have never
seen in humans before – so it is unlikely that anyone has a natural immunity to
it.
CDC has activated its emergency operations center to coordinate the agency’s emergency response. CDC’s goals are to reduce transmission and illness severity, and provide information to help health care providers, public health officials and the public address the challenges posed by this swine influenza virus. The CDC has also issued a travel warning recommending that people avoid non-essential travel to Mexico.
In addition the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has set up a Swine Flu website to help keep Kansas residents advised of the illness in Kansas.
